AREVA, via its German subsidiary Multibrid, has successfully installed and commissioned the first six M5000 turbines for the Alpha Ventus project, the first German offshore wind park located in the North Sea, 45 kilometers off the island of Borkum. The group is creating a reference in the offshore wind industry with its 5 MW turbines specially designed for offshore conditions.
This major achievement demonstrates the technical feasibility of AREVA’s M5000 turbine design and confirms the relevance of the associated installation and servicing activities carried out by the group.Under the terms of the contract signed with DOTI*, the six turbines have now entered the test phase scheduled to end this winter.

Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. recently announced the successful deployment of one of its PowerBuoys(R) at the Marine Corps Base in Hawaii. The Company has also been awarded $380,000 in additional funding for the PowerBuoy’s commissioning and in-ocean operation.
Building, deployment and operation of this PowerBuoy is part of a program with the US Navy to develop and test OPT’s wave power technology. The Navy’s support for the Hawaii program also reflects its long-term commitment to renewable energy and reducing its dependence on fuel oil shipments. Many of its naval bases around the world are suitable for OPT’s wave power stations.

For eight weeks beginning in November 2009, off the coast of New Zealand, an international team of 34 scientists and 92 support staff and crew on board the scientific drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution (JR) were at work investigating sea-level change in a region called the Canterbury Basin. It proved to be a record-breaking trip for the research team.
The JR is one of the primary research vessels of an international research program called the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). This research took place during IODP Expedition 317.

The University of Maine has received a $12.4 million grant from the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology for construction of its new deepwater offshore wind energy research and testing facility.
The 30,000 square foot addition to UMaine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center will be the only facility of its kind in the United States to include complete development capabilities for designing, prototyping and testing large structural hybrid composite and nanocomposite components for the deep water offshore wind energy industry.

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth. It might also represent the most prolific cradle for new types of animals on the planet, according to new research published in the January 8 th edition of Science.
The Scientific American reports “in the oceans, new species and genera tend to originate in the tropics and in the shallows near shore,” says paleobiologist Carl Simpson of Humboldt University in Berlin, one of the researchers on the new paper. By using a massive collection of data on fossils from mollusks to South American mammals, which records where a fossil was found, how often it is found and what accompanied it, Simpson and his colleagues find “that a majority of genera first evolve in reefs and then later expand to other habitats.”

Scientists funded by NOAA and the National Science Foundation recorded the deepest erupting volcano yet discovered. The eruption of the West Mata volcano, discovered in May, occurred nearly 4,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, in an area bounded by Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. The spectacular video was taken by an unmanned submersible toting high-definition cameras.
The imagery includes large molten lava bubbles approximately three feet across bursting into cold seawater, glowing red vents explosively ejecting lava into the sea, and the first-observed advance of lava flows across the deep-ocean seafloor. Sounds of the explosive eruption were recorded by a hydrophone and later matched to the video footage. Continue reading Scientists Film Explosive Deep Water Volcano
JDR Cable Systems, a global provider of subsea power cables, offshore umbilical systems and specialised marine cables has been awarded the contract for the supply of subsea power array cables for the first phase of London Array Offshore Wind Farm by the project consortium of DONG Energy, E.ON and Masdar.
The first phase of the development, consisting of 175 wind turbines and 2 offshore substations will be installed in water depths of up to 23 meters some 20km (12 miles) from the Kent and Essex coasts in the outer Thames Estuary. The wind farm will be connected by subsea export cables to an onshore substation at Cleve Hill, on the North Kent coast. From the substation, the electricity will be fed into the existing 400kV transmission network.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today released its most comprehensive study of the nation’s lakes to date. The draft study, which rated the condition of 56 percent of the lakes in the United States as good and the remainder as fair or poor, marked the first time EPA and its partners used a nationally consistent approach to survey the ecological and water quality of lakes. A total of 1,028 lakes were randomly sampled during 2007 by states, tribes and EPA.

Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. has announced that it has selected Oregon Iron Works of Clackamas to begin construction of its first commercial wave energy PowerBuoy® system in North America, to be installed off the Oregon coast near Reedsport. Oregon Iron Works is an Oregon company with an emerging reputation as an international leader in “green tech” manufacturing. The partnership is the direct result of Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski’s leadership in bringing green jobs and renewable energy to the Oregon economy and his commitment to the responsible development of wave energy as a commercially viable renewable energy source.
Construction of this first PowerBuoy system represents Phase One of an expected 10-PowerBuoy Reedsport wave power station, the first commercial-scale facility of its type in North America, which will generate approximately 1.5 megawatts of electricity. The nine additional PowerBuoys will be constructed and installed under Phase Two of the project.
