Crab Harvester Fined $20,000 for Fishery Violations

HARBOUR GRACE, NL – On July 6, 2009 in provincial court at Harbour Grace, Lorne Porter of Port de Grave, was convicted of providing false information in his fishing logbook. Mr. Porter was fined $20,000 and ordered by the court to hail out to Fisheries and Oceans Canada 24 hours prior to departure during the 2010 crab fishery, as well as to carry an at-sea observer at his own expense for four fishing trips. On June 2, 2008, Mr. Porter was apprehended by fishery officers of the Bay Roberts detachment after an investigation revealed inconsistencies between positional data recorded in his fishing logbook and vessel monitoring system data from his vessel the Arctic Pride.

Reporting accurate fishing coordinates is important for resource management. Conservation measures exist to protect and rebuild fish stocks so that these sustainable fishing resources can be enjoyed by communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador for generations to come.
