Disneynature’s New Film: “Oceans” Coming to a Screen Near You on Earth Day, April 22nd

The wait is almost over! Disney Nature announced on Earth Day last  year, that they would release their “Oceans” movie on Earth Day 2010, and it is finally almost here.  Now don’t get me wrong, their movie “Earth” , released last year at this time was very good, but we are a little biased towards the ocean here at Ocean Power Magazine (OPM).

The movie is narrated by Pierce Brosnan and according to Disneynature “features spectacular, never-before-seen imagery captured by the latest underwater technologies.  The movie will no doubt have breathtaking cinematography,  but there is more to this movie than just pretty pictures.  The movie seeks to get young people involved in preserving the world’s oceans and environment.  According to the movie website,  “as the film ends, audiences are left with an inspirational message, courtesy of Hollywood Records recording artists Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato.  Over the end credits, the pair team up on the original song “Make a Wave”".   All proceeds from purchases of the song via ITunes will benefit environmental charities through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.

The movie website is a also great resource for educators seeking curriculum ideas involving the oceans not just for Earth Day, but all year long.  You can download a 42-page educator’s guide to help devise learning plans.

If you are interested in seeing the movie, try to go during its opening week (April 22nd – 28th).  Disneynature will contribute $0.20 per ticket to the Nature Conservancy’s Adopt a Reef Program in the Bahamas during the initial week.  They have pledged a minimum donation of $100,000 to this program.  So get out there and celebrate Earth Day by watching this movie!
