REpower Systems AG (WKN 617703) and the Belgian offshore project development company C-Power have signed a contract agreeing the delivery of 48 wind energy turbines of the REpower 6M type. Existing REpower clients RWE Innogy and EDF EN both have a share in C-Power as strategic partners.
The tidal power plant has an installed effect of 1.5 MW, and the unique turbine blades of laminated wood with a diameter of 23 meters. Indications are that both of these variables qualify the Morild II to being the world’s largest floating power plant of its kind.

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas met in Paris from November 17th – 27th. Delegates from 48 Contracting Parties worked through ten days of difficult and important negotiations to try to strengthen the conservation of Atlantic bluefin tuna and other species under the organization’s responsibility
Wave energy developer Aquamarine Power took a major step towards the commercialisation of their Oyster technology with the announcement today of £11 ($17.3 U.S.) million new investment in the company.

The federal agency’s memo to states recognizes carbon dioxide as not only an air pollutant but a water pollutant, and notes the serious impacts that ocean acidification can have on aquatic life. Ocean acidification refers to the decrease in the pH of the Earth’s oceans caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas (GHG), from the atmosphere . Ocean acidification, like climate change, is primarily caused by increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in the atmosphere. As a result of absorbing large quantities of CO2 emissions, ocean chemistry is changing, which is likely to negatively affect important marine ecosystems and species including coral reefs, shellfish and fisheries.

The U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command awarded Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) a $4.4 million contract modification to advance the design for an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) pilot plant off the coast of Hawaii. This contract modification is an addition to a Naval Facilities Engineering Command contract for $8.1 million issued in 2009.
Nick Emery , Managing Director of the company’s UK operations said: “Fred.Olsen Renewables has undertaken a thorough and complete review of all of our potential wind farm developments. As an independent power producer we have concluded that the most efficient use of our development resource is in our onshore portfolios, where historically we have had considerable success. Crystal Rig Wind Farms I and II, for example, provide almost 10% of Scotland’s operational wind capacity.”
The BBC reports that Cairn Energy, the Scotish-based energy firm involved in oil exploration in the Arctic, has refused to publish full details of its contingency plan should a spill occur. The company and the Greenland government told a BBC Scotland investigation team the plan was secret to prevent sabotage by “third parties”.

Delegates at the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT ) turned their attention, today, to the future of the Atlantic bluefin tuna. The 48-member ICCAT, meeting in Paris until Nov 27, is charged with setting the rules and quotas for Atlantic fishing of bluefin. It is also tasked with monitoring compliance, for which it has only a questionable reocrd.
