Vancouver Island Tidal Energy Project Enters New Phase

The Canoe Pass Tidal Energy Consortium is proposing to construct and operate the Canoe Pass Tidal Energy Project at a site located about 14 kilometres (km) north of Campbell River, British Columbia (BC), Canada. The Project will involve the installation of two 250 kilowatt (kW) vertical-axis hydrokinetic turbines in a new pile-supported turbine support structure constructed in the narrow channel between Quadra and Maud Islands. The Project also involves the re-establishment of natural tidal flow through the channel by removal of fill from an existing man-made causeway constructed in the 1940s.

The Canoe Pass Tidal Energy Consortium is a partnership between Canoe Pass Tidal Energy Corporation of Vancouver Island and New Energy Corporation, based in Calgary, Alberta.

Canoe Pass Tidal Energy Corporation is a BC-based renewable energy project developer. The company was incorporated in 2003 and has focused its business activity on the development of BC’s significant tidal energy power potential. Upon incorporation, Canoe Pass secured investigative permit tenures to a number of potential tidal energy sites on the BC coast, including the site from which the company has taken its name.

New Energy Corporation is the developer of the proprietary EnCurrent™ in-stream hydrokinetic power generation system that will be used in the Project. The principals of the company are both professional engineers with significant experience in the development and commercialization of new technologies. Based in Calgary, Alberta, New Energy was founded in December of 2003 and has maintained its focus on the in-stream power generation market. The company has taken a methodical approach to the commercialization of its EnCurrent™ product line, initially introducing smaller models into the market and leveraging the knowledge gained with the development and operation of these models in order to develop and commercialize larger models.

The Canoe Pass Tidal Energy Project is the first proposed commercial tidal energy project in Canada.  As such, the enviromental assessment mechanism for such projects is being developed in conjunction with the assessment of this project.  Chris Knight, president of Canoe Pass Tidal Energy Corporation,  is  working with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Transport Canada, Environment Canada, Natural Resources Canada, and the British Columbia Integrated Land Management Bureau tin co-ordinating all of  the necessary environmental assessments and reviews.
